Jackie Leven has died of cancer at the age of 61 (Obituary From The Daily Telegraph)

Tributes have been paid to Leven, who enjoyed great critical acclaim but little commercial attention for his soulful music inspired by his colourful life.
His career spanned four decades and included homeless spells for the Kirkcaldy contemporary of former Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
Born into a Romany family in 1950, Leven played in local bands as a young man before leaving Scotland when he attracted the attention of gangs.
He slept rough, spent time busking and became addicted to heroin as well as a heavy drinker.
But along the way, his distinctive works were hailed as masterpieces, taking in the characters and experiences he met with on his travels.
A statement on his website announced his battle with cancer shortly before he died.
It said: "Sometimes, you have to tell people about the Bad[sic], as well as the Good[sic].
"It is with a heavy heart, therefore, that I have to relate the sad news that the great Scottish singer-songwriter JACKIE LEVEN is gravely ill, suffering from cancer, and, in all candour, has only a few days to live.
"From his emergence as leader of the underrated DOLL BY DOLL in the seventies, through well documented addiction problems which Leven overcame with remarkable strength of will, culminating in a solo resurgence through the 1980s to the here and now, Jackie has amassed an amazing body of work – the composer of over four hundred songs, including arguably his greatest song – ‘Call Mother’, from the album ‘Mystery of Love’ (ranked by Q magazine as one of ‘100 Best Albums of All Time’).
"If sales didn’t always reflect the overwhelmingly positive critical reception his albums received, he nonetheless remained a perceptive writer and performer.
"Jackie was imbued with a restless creativity, and always searching for new settings for his ruminative lyrical forays, laced with humour and melodic grace. As a performer, Jackie could enthral and entrance the audience with picaresque tales taken from first-hand experience.
"Those that have worked with Jackie will know of his mordant wit and very idiosyncratic world view. His latest release, Wayside Shrines and The Code of the Travelling Man, recorded with multi-instrumentalist Michael Cosgrave was yet more proof of Leven’s enduring talent and inexhaustible creative energies."
Producer and musician David Wrench posted on Twitter this afternoon: "My dear friend Jackie Leven died last night. He was a truly incredible man. I can't believe I'll never record that beautiful voice again.
"Jackie Leven and I made 14 albums together. We never argued I learned so much from him. Many of my best memories of recent years are of him."
Leven had been due to perform at the Green Hotel in Kinross for Mundell Music on Friday night.
Mundell Music tweeted: "Sad News – Jackie Leven has passed away. He was a unique talent and was to have played this weekend for Mundell Music."

Ex-Rolling Stone Mick Taylor is heading Backstage at The Green as part of the annual FIFESTOCK MUSIC FESTIVAL and this will be the Band's ONLY SCOTTISH DATE!!!

Michael Kevin Taylor was born Jan. 17, 1949, in Welwyn Garden City, England. He grew up in Hatfield, a London suburb, and began playing guitar at age 9. Taylor became interested in joining a rock band after his parents took him to see Bill Haley & the Comets.

As a teen, Taylor played in bands called the Juniors and the Gods. In 1967, after ace guitarist Peter Green left John Mayall's Bluesbreakers to form Fleetwood Mac, Mayall chose Taylor as Green's replacement.

Taylor toured the United States with the Bluesbreakers and appeared on such albums as Bare Wires and Blues From Laurel Canyon (both 1968). In 1969, he accepted the Rolling Stones' offer to replace the departing Brian Jones, who died later that year. The Stones had already established their reputation as one of rock's greatest bands and had just issued one of their best LPs, Beggar's Banquet(1968). But Taylor quickly added his imprint on the Stones' style and was present for the legendary concert tours, during their 1969–1974 heyday. He played on some of Let It Bleed (1969) and all of the live disc Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out (1970).

Sticky Fingers (1971), was the first studio Stones' album for which he was present during the entire recording. He added his famous vibrato effect to the blues lead guitar line on "Sway" and handled most of the guitars on the quietly majestic "Moonlight Mile." Perhaps Taylor's best-remembered Stones work was the Santana-like lead guitar in the jam break of the jazzy "Can't You Hear Me Knocking." On the Stones' classic 1972 double LP, Exile on Main Street, Taylor co-wrote "Ventilator Blues" and contributed bluesy guitar to such chestnuts as "All Down the Line" and "Soul Survivor."

Taylor plays wah-wah guitar on the hit single "(Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo) Heartbreaker," from Goats Head Soup(1973), which also exhibited Taylor's melodic touches on ballads such as "Winter." Taylor's final LP as a Rolling Stone was It's Only Rock 'n' Roll (1974), which included his long, jazzy solo on "Time Waits for No One"

Shortly after the album's release, Taylor quit the Stones. Many theories have been offered for Taylor's departure, including conflict with guitarist Keith Richards and Taylor's fear that he'd get caught up in the band's allegedly drug-crazed lifestyle. Whatever the reason, Taylor's replacement, Ron Wood — formerly of the Faces — brought the band a grittier sound.

In 1975, Taylor toured Europe in the Jack Bruce Band, led by former Cream bassist Bruce. Four years later, he issued an eponymous jazz-fusion solo debut that sold poorly in the punk-rock era. Taylor toured with the Alvin Lee Band in the early '80s and did a reunion tour with the Bluesbreakers. He played on Bob Dylan's Infidels (1983) and toured with the songwriting legend. During the latter part of the '80s, Taylor formed a series of short-lived bands that played blues-rock in eastern U.S. clubs.

He issued the live Stranger in This Town and in 1989 was inducted, with the Stones, into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In the early '90s, Taylor went to L.A. and worked with the Textones' Carla Olson, the Jimmy Woods Band and others.

Recently converted from a disused leisure club, Backstage is now a live music venue holding 120 people, complete with its own separate bar.

Raul Malo, Albert Lee, Strawbs, David Knopfler, Ian McLagan, Terry Reid, Rodney Crowell have all played at Backstage.

Chris Keys in Aberlady

Northern Irish Singer/songwriter Chris Keys had a passion for music from a young age.
He grew up in Portstewart, a small seaside town where the beach, night sky and surfing brought out his creativity and had a big influence on his songwriting.
As a teenager Chris played in many bands gigging around the north coast area and began writing original material.

In 2005 he won North Down 'Pubstar' wowing the Judges with his increasing catalogue of songs.
Chris has been performing for years as a solo artist at a wide range of events.
In 2010 he appeared on Balcony Tv, Blast Fm, feile Fm, Bandwagon Tv and performed at many great venues in Belfast and throughout Northern Ireland.
Also in August 2010 Chris went to No.1 on the N.I Chart with 'City lights', followed by a second No.1 in December with 'There for you'.

I was lucky enough to have Gene play a few GIGs for me some years ago. Here's hoping that he may one day venture back to this side of the Pond!

Ian McNabb played two nights here at 'Backstage' at the Green Hotel, Kinross during the FIFESTOCK Music Festival 2011. Presented by Mundell Music here is a picture of Ian signing autographs for fans after the second show.

If David Mundell’s Backstage at the Green Hotel space was in London, its promotions would probably feature in the national press’s review pages daily.

It’s an intimate room but with a capacity that makes it viable for bands as well as solo artists.

It’s an ideal place to hear YouTube sensation Andy McKee (right) , who has a winningly self-deprecating way with his audience and makes the room feel even more intimate. McKee acquired an enormous following when videos of his fluidly able acoustic guitar playing appeared on the internet. One, featuring his aptly named Drifting, is approaching 40 million hits. He has benefited from advances in acoustic guitar technology and the work of players such as Girvan’s own Preston Reed and the late Michael Hedges. He can play percussively like Reed, setting up drum rhythms and with both hands poised, pianist-like over the strings, although more often he uses conventional picking, tapping and hammering-on techniques.

What he does is undoubtedly impressive, including instrumental covers of Toto’s Africa and Tears for Fears’ Everybody Wants to Rule the World, and his three guitars, including the ultra-rich baritone model, sound beautiful. But while Ebony Coast’s songlike progression and Into the Ocean, played on his “harp guitar” (a six-string with added bass strings that are plucked rather than fretted) hinted at something deeper, a greater sense of structural development and more – dare I say - soul in his compositions would be welcome additions to his musical accomplishments.

Trevor Burton Backstage

Trevor Burton plays Backstage at the Green Hotel, Kinross on Fri & Sat 4th & 5th March 2011 as part of the FIFESTOCK Music Festival. See all Mundell Music GIGs here.

Trevor Burton was born in Aston, Birmingham. He started playing guitar at a young age and by 1963 was leading his own group called The Everglades. In 1964 he joined Danny King & The Mayfair Set, along with Keith Smart formerly of The Everglades (drums), Roger Harris (keyboards), Denis Ball (Bass) and vocalist King.

Trevor Burton was a founding member of the sixties chart topping band The Move and was initially with them from 1966-1969 and is touring again in 2010 as ‘The Move featuring Trevor Burton & Bev Bevan’ with ‘The Animals and Friends’.

When he left in 1969 he stayed down south with his close friend Steve Winwood; Steve had just formed the band Traffic. Trevor Trevor decided to chill for a while, but soon got the urge to play live again, this has always been his first love. He got in touch with Steve Gibbons with the view to forming a new band, together with Denny Laine formerly with the Moody Blues, and Allen White from The Plastic Ono Band.they formed the band called Balls. After the split with Balls in 1971, Trevor spent the next few years as one of the top session musicians with Island Records. At the request of Raymond Froggatt, Trevor returned to his hometown of Birmingham where he worked with Ray until 1976.

Trevor teamed up once again with his close friend Steve Gibbons to enjoy chart success and top 10 hits with the Steve Gibbons Band. For the next 7 years he toured the world with Steve. He left in 1983 to form his own band playing his unique style of blues. They started performing twice weekly at the Red Lion, Sparkbrook, Birmingham with a line up including sax player Steve Ajao. In 1985 the band recorded an album entitled 'Double Zero'.

He teamed up with Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin as one of the Journeymen Musicians. Then he joined The Big Town Playboys touring the UK and Europe, he performed shows with Noel Reading a friend from the 60s and spent 9 months on the road with Dexies Midnight Runners.

As if this isn't enough he has also played with Jimi Hendrix and also appears on one of his albums!!! Now Trevor still gets the buzz from playing his kind of music to a receptive audience. In 1993 he called on Maz Mitrenko to join the band, also former ELO keyboard player Richard Tandy was with him for a few years. Trevor has had various rhythm sections but never really settled with any until November 1999 when he asked Bill Jefferson (Drummer) to join the band. Pez Connor rejoined the band in April 2009.and The Trevor Burton Band is now unstoppable. It is the most exciting live band ever to grace the stage. With the new line up having the chemistry, and telepathy that Trevor has been looking for. See them to live and enjoy the moment, you won't be disappointed.

The first set commenced with 'Turn your Heart Around' and other tracks consisted of '"Oxygen', What becomes of the broken hearted', 'Tracks of my tears', 'Caroline Goodbye' and 'Say you don't mind'.

A short intermission where numerous drinks were consumed and then...The second set! 'Wonderful', Andorra', 'Misty Roses', 'Old and Wise', She's not There' and 'I don't believe in Miracles' amongst others. A great night was had by all!

Deborah Bonham Backstage

Deborah Bonham plays "BACKSTAGE" at the Green Hotel in Kinross on Fri 8th & Sat 9th April 2011. Jerry Shirley will be on Drums who was the Drummer with HUMBLE PIE and Special Guest Steve Rodgers who is Paul Rodgers Son.

Deborah is currently recording tracks for her much anticipated new album with Producer NICK TAUBER, best known for his work with THIN LIZZY and MARILLION. She has also been writing with JOHN HOGG, a member of MOKE, who tasted chart success in the USA and toured the UK, Europe and the US with The Black Crowes.

The Bonham family tree is firmly rooted in musical tradition. First was John Bonham, the esteemed drummer for Led Zeppelin, who was followed by his son Jason, a skilled skinsman in his own right, who performed with Zeppelin at their much-hailed O2 show.

Add to that list Deborah Bonham - sister of John, aunt of Jason .Born in Worcestershire, Deborah was only five when John joined Led Zeppelin, and this powerful introduction sparked in her the overwhelming desire to write and perform.

The success of the first trip to the USA with her band lead to further tours, shows in Los Angeles House of Blues with guests Slash and Terry Reid, Dallas Fort Worth, Houston, New York and Chicago House of Blues. Whilst in LA, Deborah performed live on LA's Rockline Radio to three million listeners throughout North America and Canada.

Back in the UK and Europe, Deborah has toured and performed with Van Halen, Alannah Myles, Tim Rose, Uli Jon Roth, Paul Weller, Humble Pie, Donovan, Lonnie Donegan, Jools Holland, Ann Peebles, Foreigner and Paul Rodgers. She’s also played festivals from Glastonbury to Donnington, and twice at Fairport Conventions Cropredy Festival.

2004's CD ‘The Old Hyde’, which featured Mick Fleetwood, The Pretenders' Robbie McIntosh, Robbie Blunt and Dougie Boyle of Robert Plant's band, and Jason Bonham. Reviewers were certainly impressed with the album, ‘Classic Rock’ leading the plaudits:“…the album has balls…a classy set of bluesy hard rock”. The influential All Music Guide judged that it was "…one of the best blues-rock albums of the early 21st Century…not a bummer in sight"

Finally, Deborah has reached a period in her life where she feels comfortable. Her love and respect for John are undying, but she believes she has paid her dues and is now respected in the music industry for her own talents. "You have to remember that Led Zeppelin/John were and are even more so now so revered. It’s been difficult because people judge you for being associated with that name. I had a very big decision to make all those years ago: do I renounce that name and invent myself as somebody else or do I actually stick it out?" Deborah stuck it out partly in recognition of the inspiration she drew from John: "I was so very proud of my brother, why on earth would I renounce him, he was the one that gave me the inspiration to sing. He was my big brother and I loved him so much. My decision was to make him proud – nothing else really mattered – my duty is to do the best I possibly can to uphold the name which I feel I’ve done and am doing as Jason is. So it’s not so much having to prove anything anymore. I feel quite comfortable in my skin with that".

Indeed, at a recent show in Malta opening for Robert Plant, the Zeppelin front man was quick to acknowledge Deborah’s talents, as Deborah told journalist Stephen Gullette: "Robert came and hugged me… He said "My God, I can’t believe what you’re doing".

2008's CD ‘Duchess’ (Warners/Rhino) - 'stands as her finest work to date'. She rips through 13 original compositions backed by her forceful working band - former Humble Pie drummer Jerry Shirley, bassist Ian Rowley, keyboardist Gerard Louis, and guitarist Peter Bullick. Each song showcases her soulful singing and her effortless, sensitive approach to a gamut of styles, from blues and soul to hard rock and English folk. The album also includes guest drummer Jason Bonham and a duet with Paul Rodgers, the former frontman for Free and Bad Co.

Reviews of ‘Duchess’ have been glowing, Blues Matters! describing Deborah as "a blues mama par excellence" and Blues Review listed her as one of the New Women of Blues. Modern Guitars magazine called ‘Duchess’ "A celebration of soul, strength and family…the album stands as her finest work."

The individual members of The Blues Band were already held in admiration by generations of rhythm & blues fans when they formed back in 1979. Almost two and a half decades and over 16 albums later they continue to add to their growing army of followers, and it’s not unheard of to find three generations from the same family at a gig.
The band are today acknowledged throughout Europe and beyond as being amongst the very finest purveyors of rhythm & blues. They have inspired numerous other blues bands, many of which have come and gone …The Blues Band have remained a constant, increasingly popular fixture, however, and all with only a modicum of help from the record business – as Gary’s oft quoted comment states "the music industry doesn’t bother us and we don’t bother them."
This independent streak goes right back to their early days when in an unusual move the band "bootlegged" their own first album – certain copies of which are now collector’s items. The ‘bootlegging’ came about because, having recorded their first album, the so called ‘major label’ which was to release it changed their minds and the band didn’t have the cash to pay the studio bill. So they got 1000 copies pressed up, mastered from a copy tape that they had, signed the plain white numbered sleeves and sold them at gigs & via mail order etc. Only then did another ‘major label’ pick up the album and release it widely.
It’s a credit to both the band’s talent and to their many thousands of fans’ loyalty and support that they have since sustained such a long career, and brings into question the oft-spoken phrase by parents despairing of their aspiring musical offspring, "When are you going to get yourself a proper job?"
Such successful musical mavericks are fairly rare and are borne more from word-of-mouth than promotional hype. Either way they still have to cut the mustard. These boys have real feel – for their music, for their audience and for each other. Playing with maturity and passion is second nature to all of them .... Paul Jones has devoted much of a creative career spanning almost 40 years to this eternal, inspiring form - the very base and roots of rock & roll ..... Dave Kelly, with his late, great sister, Jo-Ann, introduced a whole generation to the works of Memphis Minnie, Son House, Robert Johnson and Mississippi Fred McDowell ...... the blues bit Tom McGuinness in the late '50s and has never let go - the same sharp, tight grip which still holds Rob Townsend and Gary Fletcher within its spell. So here they are, as enthusiastic as ever - Britain's finest, most skilled practitioners in the art of the blues. The Blues Band.

Colin Blunstone plays "BACKSTAGE" at the Green Hotel, Kinross on Saturday 12th Feb 2011

Colin Blunstone is one of Britain's most respected and popular vocalists. With a very distinctive breathy voice, managing to be both sweet and strong, he was the lead vocalist with the highly successful and influential Zombies in the early 60s. The Zombies were one of the bands to 'break' America in the wake of Beatlemania, and in their relatively short existence produced some great material - She's Not There, Time Of The Season, Tell Her No and the critically-acclaimed album Odyssey and Oracle. When the 60s ended, Colin enjoyed a solo career with equal success and several further hit singles and albums. He has remained friends with ex-Zombies and collaborated on a number of ventures over the years.

His solo album, The Ghost of You And Me was released in the UK, Benelux and Scandinavia on 9 March 2009. Blunstone completed a twelve date UK tour, his first in several years. He continues to tour with Rod Argent as The Zombies, and the original surviving members of The Zombies played four reunion concerts performing Odessey and Oracle, in April 2009.

In 2010, Sony released Colin Blunstone Original Album Classics, a 3-disc boxed set featuring digitally re-mastered versions of Blunstone's solo albums, One Year, Journey and Ennismore. The collection also includes two bonus tracks that were originally released as non-LP b-sides in UK.

Raul Malo goes 'Backstage'

Raúl Francisco Martínez-Malo Jr. (born 7 August 1965, Miami, Florida), known professionally as Raúl Malo, is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist and record producer. He was the lead singer of country music band The Mavericks and the co-writer of many of their singles, as well as Rick Trevino's 2003 single "In My Dreams". Since the disbanding of the Mavericks in the early 2000s, Malo has pursued a solo career.

On Saturday 29th January he will be at 'Backstage' at the Green Hotel, Kinross. This is a rare opportunity to catch such a high profile Artist in an intimate setting.

Rab Noakes Goes Backstage!

Rab Noakes is a force to be reckoned with in the world of music in Scotland and beyond.

A recent preview piece in The Herald went thus:

Not that you would know it from his lean rock’n’roll physique but Rab Noakes is now in his sixties. His four decades of involvement in music have been marked by two recent releases: a second album with his occasional band The Varaflames, titled Unlimited Mileage, and the release on CD for the first time of his debut album Do You See The Lights? which first saw the light of day in 1970. Showcasing an exemplary taste in interpretations alongside his own songwriting, a Noakes show is a decidedly non-fusty lesson in the history of popular music.

2010 sees the release of no less than three new albums from Rab. One is a live one from Edinburgh in 2005. One is a collection of songs by Boudleaux & Felice Bryant and the other Standing Up Again is a new collection from 2009.

Rab's first album was released in 1970. Thirty years later in the year 2000, Rab formed his own record label and released a couple of new releases. In the intervening years Rab Noakes has made his presence felt as a creative entity across music and media.

From being one of the singer-songwriters of the 1970s to his present activities with Neon Productions he has released almost twenty albums and toured extensively. The once sought-after hit single remained elusive but didn't impede his progress.

In recent years he has been involved in a rich mixture of production, writing and performance.

Before he and his wife Stephanie Pordage set up Neon in 1995 he spent an eight-year spell as a BBC employee where he ran the radio music and entertainment shows in Scotland. A formal job in radio was appropriate as the radio had played a major part in Noakes' creative development from an early age.

Rab's 2007 release of new material on Neon was his second album with the Varaflames - ''Unlimited Mileage'
‘Do you see the lights?’ Rab's debut album from 1970 is now available on CD for the first time. This was released on the Neon label in 2008.

In 2009 Rab has joined forces with Allan Taylor for a number of joint shows based on their similar careers and parallel experiences.

Having sat on the Scottish Arts Council for four years Rab was appointed to the Joint Board of SAC & Scottish Screen in 2006.

Rab is also elected Chair of the Executive Committee of the Musicians' Union.

THE KAST OFF KINKS are Koming To Kinross!

The iconic British rock band, The Kinks, are often cited as one of the most important and influential rock bands of all time.

Their first hit, You Really Got Me, in 1964, broke new ground with driving power chords and Dave Davies’ distorted guitar sounds, and created a template for many bands to follow in a rock and roll development which led variously to heavy metal, new wave and grunge.

Later work saw the band’s style change to more melodic songs, highlighting Ray Davies’ lyrical and observational skills in songs like Sunny Afternoon, Dead End Street and Waterloo Sunset.

Although the band’s popularity in the UK waned in the 1970s, they found new commercial success in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and returned to the UK top 20 in 1983 with Come Dancing. The Kinks continued as a recording and gigging band until 1996, when the Davies brothers went their separate ways with solo careers.

During the band’s 32-year career, there were some changes in personnel, Pete Quaife, the original bassist, was replaced by John Dalton in 1969, and keyboard player John Gosling was added in 1970. Following the two Johns’ departure in the late 1970s, Jim Rodford became the Kinks’ bassist (after a short tenure by Andy Pyle) and Ian Gibbons took over on keyboards. Original drummer Mick Avory left the band in 1983, to be replaced by Bob Henrit.

The Kast Off Kinks formed in 1994 to keep the music playing on, and it is what the name implies - the original line-up consisted of the band that played Lola (apart from Ray and Dave), together with singer/guitarist Dave Clarke. The current line-up is the band that played Come Dancing, still with Dave Clarke covering for the Davies brothers.

Mick Avory, Jim Rodford, Ian Gibbons and Dave Clarke are the KAST OFF KINKS.

Benny Gallagher

For sheer quality and distinction you need look no further than the career of Benny Gallagher. We managed to stage a great, great show on Friday 3rd December here at 'Backstage' at the Green Hotel in Kinross, Scotland. The superb Steve Forbert played an intimate show to rapturous applause. Old and new songs were sang including 'Streets of this town' All in all a good night despite the snow and ice outside!

Totally useless in snow....thank goodness that I have the 'Defender....no one's laughing now are they!

The Dylan Project

Snow Snow Snow!
So we managed to get the Dylan Project show on the road so to speak. We should have had apprx 60 people but due to the snow we only got 15 brave souls who braved the weather! Well those of you who missed it missed a great gig! Complete with a Santa song we had a varied selection from Bob's catalogue of songs.....makes me want to go back and re visit 'Under the Red Skies'!
We have Steve Forbert on Friday and it makes me wonder what the situation will be there! Still, it's another day for things to improve.
Things are busy at the moment with booking shows for Raul Malo, David Knopfler and Sandi Thom to name but a few. Have a look at the website for details. Fifestock is nearly all arranged. The line up is good and varied with something for everyone.

Recent gigs have been going very well attendance wise. Most gigs have been selling out. Terry Reid's two night stint was a joy to behold....suppose you had to be there. They don't call him Superlungs for nothing!
Whilst Terry was here at the Inn at Lathones we had a couple of short day trips around the area. St.Andrews and Anstruther were the two places we went to. I took him to the Ship Tavern which is a favourite of mine!
I was playing Tom Petty's Mudcrutch CD in the car and when Tom Petty sang 'I'm a loser, I'm at the top of my game'...Terry thought that was a great line and he laughed! Check his CD's out he is a great legendary Artist.

The music scene in Perthshire is about to be shaken up! A brand new music venue is launching this autumn within The Green Hotel in Kinross. Operated by Mundell Music, the performance area to the rear of the hotel will have separate access, and in keeping with Mundell Music's previous music ventures, gigs will be kept intimate with tickets available for every performance. This means the audience really feels like part of the experience as the acts don't 'disappear' after the event, instead they can often be found hanging around for a drink and a chat with fans!
It was Mundell who put the Music into The Inn at Lathones, St Andrews, hosting regular gigs and workshops as well as the hugely successful Fifestock festival. The new and unique setting at The Green will incorporate many genres of music, with Mundell Music regularly bringing quality artists 'backstage' to meet the fans.
Being just off the M90 and less than an hour from Edinburgh and Perth this promises to be a very exciting new destination for Scottish gig-goers!

Promising to be an attraction in its own right, this will be a place to regularly indulge your passion for music.

AFTER THE GOLDRUSH rises from the ashes of Perth's famous GOLDRUSH RECORDS, the fair city's only truly cutting-edge record shop. Founded in the heady days of Punk and New Wave in 1977 (when music felt a bit dangerous and you could only buy food at the supermarket!) it closed its doors in 2007 after 30 years.

But 3 years on, a vintage vinyl revival is coming in the form of AFTER THE GOLDRUSH, a new venture by John Thomson, to be housed in the unique environment of The Green Hotel in Kinross. John welcomes the chance to continue to work with David Mundell of Mundell Music - a long-standing customer of 30 years!

This exciting project will bring live and recorded music together in the same place. As well as an abundance of quality, used vinyl of all descriptions and ages, the shop will also stock CDs, both old and new, posters, T-shirts and a range of Hi-fi equipment.

KT Tunstall sells out within minutes

KT Tunstall's "Secret Gig" at The Inn at Lathones sold out within minutes of it's announcement. It was one of five gigs but was the only performance with a ticket price. £10 was the advertised price, only available via on-line purchase and set up by KT herself with all monies going to charity. The decision was made to levy a ticket charge at The Inn at Lathones due to the very limited capacity of only 50 to avoid potential upset of fans turning up at the door and being turned away.
Future acts at The Inn will include John Otway and Curved Air.

Award-winning hotelier and music promoter, David Mundell of Mundell Music, plans to share the secrets of his success with hoteliers across the UK.

The creator of the Fifestock festivals, Mundell, 53, has worked with acts such as Mick Taylor, Curtis Stigers and Ian ‘Mac’ McLagan during his 12 years in the music business. Live music events have had a significant impact on sales at his previously-owned hotel The Bein Inn in Perthshire, and during the last 2 years working in collaboration with The Inn at Lathones in Fife.

Mick Taylor & his Band played two nights at the Inn at Lathones on Fri & Sat 5th & 6th March 2010. Presented by Mundell Music it was a couple of gigs that you will remember all your life. With a max capacity of only 40 per night Mick Taylor was awesome!
Songs included 'You Gotta Move', 'No Expectations', 'Blind Willie McTell' with it's 'All along the Watchtower inclusion' and the superb 'Twisted Sister'.
It was a privilege to be present infront of the great man.....one of life's great moments.

I would certainly recommend the new Stephen Stills CD 'Live at the Shepherds Bush' It is a glorious new release from the Legendary Guitarist that he clearly is! If nothing else show some support and buy it......and if you have'nt ever bought that double album 'Manassas' then go and buy that as well. That is an album that would accompany me to a desert Island! That Band could do anything. I had the honour of meeting Al Perkins on more than a few occasions and I love it when he talked about that Band! They could do anything....just listen to it and you will see what I mean.

Criteria is as follows;
1) Three Songs should be submitted on a CD and performed by the Entrant.
2) A short Biog with Name & Address written or typed on an A4 sheet of paper.
3) A photo of the entrant.

Great GIGs at Mundell Music

Well the New Year has started with a bang so to speak! We may have a chance of having the legendary John Sebastian here at the Inn at Lathones (St.Andrews in Scotland) during the Summer. I have never seen him live and I'm sure it would be an experience not to miss. The Stories that He could tell would be worth it alone. Stories from the Lovin Spoonful through to Woodstock through to Crosby Stills Nash & Young! Bring it on I say!
Next up for a possible date is the wonderful Amos Garrett. He has played for me before when I was at the FBI. He gives a great show and I would really recommend him to anyone. He was the Guitarist on Maria Muldaur's 'Midnight at the Oasis'. He is comming in October & it makes me wonder if he will find time to go Fly Fishing this time!

Robby Hecht is one of Nashvilles leading lights and has quickly established himself as a truly original voice of new America with thoughtful songs blended with glorious melodies.

The music of Robby Hecht represents a return to the early 70s golden era of acoustic pop where thoughtful, well-crafted lyrics were blended with timeless melodies to impact mainstream music and culture. His debut album Late Last Night, produced by Lex Price (Mindy Smith) and mixed by Roger Moutenot (Yo La Tengo, Roseanne Cash), was released in May of 2008 and features an impressive list of guest performers including Mindy Smith, Jeff Coffin, Thad Cockrell, Jill Andrews of the Everybodyfields, John Deaderick (Patty Griffin), Andrea Zonn (James Taylor) and more.

A Happy New Year to one and all!
Lets hope that it will be a good one and a peaceful one.
We have been selling quite a few Tickts over the Festive Period and we have very few Tickets left for 'Paul Jones & Dave Kelly', 'Snowy White' and a couple of others which escape me! Please check out the WebSite and you all can expect a few changes to the site within the next few weeks. The weather has not been good has it!!!!!! Snow and more snow...just as my vintage Land Rover decided that it needed a new tyre and of course has been out of action just when I needed it! Jaguars are never very good in the snow I'm afraid.
Charlie & Billy enjoyed their Christmas down in Yorkshire where they had the run of the House so to speak.......formed a 'gang' with their host 'Hector' and so we had three mad Cairn Terriers on the loose! Life will start to become 'normal' again during the next week when the business world will rear it's head after a long lay off for the Christmas Holidays and we will soon see how many casualties there will be with different Businesses going bust due to a sustained hard and tough period of trading.

Nitty Griity Dirt Band

Hello!
There is a great Interview with the NITTY GRITTY DIRT BAND in the current issue of MAVERICK which is a must have monthly magazine....available in WH Smith.
They are a Band with History and always oooozed quality. They could blow most Bands away on an off night putting it mildly! A favourite Album of theirs is the ACOUSTIC CD which they brought out in the mid nineties.....you really should go out and buy it. It's one of those discs that you always end up putting into the CD player time after time! I have a great question for anyone who is interested in Music - 'What are your favourite Bands or Artists?' Usually everyone will list their top five Bands/Artists......Then the next question! What have you been listening to in the last four months in your CD player? Always it is different to the previous question!
I have been fortunate to have Nathan McEuen come and play for me a couple of years ago.....check him out and you will see what I mean!
Hopefully ONE day we may have the NGDB here at the Inn! Well you can always dream cant you!

The Bluebird Café - Live at The Inn at Lathones

Nashville’s Finest Songwriters come to Scotland

April 13th until Saturday 17th 2010.

The Bluebird Café will partner with Mundell Music to present two performance series at The Inn at Lathones in 2010 with the intent of making the series (two shows) an annual event.

Proposed Artists are Don Henry, Craig Carothers, Kim Richey and Danny Flowers with Andrea Glass 'Sitting In'

There will be a Songwriting Contest for the over 21's and the under 21's which will be judged by the legendary Benny Gallagher.

Paul Lamb & The Kingsnakes Review

Paul Lamb and his Band played two nights here at the INN AT LATHONES near St.Andrews in Scotland. They had just completed a grueling tour of Poland and Lithuania which proved that Scotland was'nt that cold after all.
The show opened with Paul's son Ryan playing Boogie Blues Guitar after which he was then joined by the Rhythm Section who lighted the touch paper.......Paul Lamb then joined proceedings with his incredible Blues Harmonica. He really is a Master of playing an audience...he very soon had everyone in the palm of his hand. Great songs too many to mention but 'Crazy For Me', Ya Ya Blues and 'The Blues Had a Baby' were a wonderful snapshot as to why everyone was in attendance......Paul Lamb is a Master to his Trade surrounded by a Band that can cruise or go into overdrive at their will.
No excuse catch them when they are next at the Inn

Agents & Tour Managers

Hello Readers!
A recent GIG and a future GIG here at the Inn at Lathones proved that there is NO loyalty or professionalism in some of todays Agents/Tour managers.
A gentlemans agreement-What's that!
I had the misfortune to have to deal with the worst tour manager I've ever met in over 12 years of promoting live music. Talk about obnoxious and rude as well as being full of his OWN importance.... Talk about taking advantage of our hospitality. The sad part was that out of a party of 5 people it was the TM himself that took advantage NOT the Artist. Still I will remember......what goes aroung comes around and HE certainly will not be welcome at the Inn again. I have had the privilege of meeting many many top class Tour Managers......Some have worked with, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Tina Turner etc etc and they are approachable and reasonable that always look at both sides of the Position and MANAGE the situation accordingly.
Now for Agents! How can you have a GIG that's already arranged...events have gone to press and then are told the GIGs off. These things happen I'm afraid...thats what I'm told. But think of this readers. What would they have said if I had called them up to cancel? No chance Eh! Oh yes and I will not be dealing with them anymore either!!!!

Little Feat - Review

Paul Barrere & Fred Tackett fro LITTLE FEAT played two blind'in shows at the Inn at Lathones near St.Andrews during November 2009. A BIG sound was created with only their two acoustic guitars and a mandolin.....Songs included, 'Down on the Farm', 'Rocket in my pocket', 'Willin', 'Dixie Chicken', 'Sailin Shoes', 'Missin You', Honest Man', 'Fool Yourself'', All that you Dream' and 'Rad Gumbo' amongst others! A great time was had by all. Paul certainly had a blast as he managed during the day to get a round of golf at The Old Course (Eat your heart out Kenny Gradney!)
They will be back next year! In the meantime checkout our event website MUNDELL MUSIC.

These long standing co-vocalists with The Blues Band get a big buzz out of taking things down a level, simplifying the music a little, and plying their trade as a duo, thus imbuing their very own personal and individual approaches to a dynamic, rootsy and exhilarating set of Country Blues. Venues large and small have been hushed and then enraptured by the sense of ‘old times’ in the Mississippi Delta.

PAUL JONES vocals and harmonica

Paul’s career is well charted …. heartthrob singer with Manfred Mann in the '60s, solo hits, songwriting, film and theatre success .… a thrillingly varied and successful career. Apart from his live work with The Blues Band and The Manfreds, he is also currently well known and respected for his work as a DJ, presenting BBC Radio 2’s Rhythm and Blues show and his Jazz FM programmes.

Paul’s feeling for his music and masterfully soulful harmonica playing has kept him at the top of his field in session work …. with countless performances recorded for TV/cinema soundtracks and radio publicity campaigns. He’s been voted top male vocalist by The British Blues Connection and in 1994 was presented with a special award for ‘services to the blues’. In 2001 Paul was the guest of honour on This Is Your Life – an opportunity to recall and celebrate his many successful years in the entertainment industry. (For more on Paul see The Blues Band).

DAVE KELLY vocals and guitar

Dave followed his very talented sister, Jo Ann Kelly, into the world of professional music in 1966 …. they’d previously been regular winners of every talent contest they could get their names down for - on their annual Warners Summer Holiday Camps, playing Everly Brothers hits and early Rock ‘n’ Roll. London’s frenetically hip, yet cool, culture at that time made it seem natural that Dave’s path would cross with the those of Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, John Lee Hooker, Son House, Buddy Guy …. to name a few. Sometimes the meetings were casual but ultimately Dave has played with all of them and toured with Wolf and Hooker.

Over the years he’s achieved many accolades for his guitar work and vocals. He was voted Acoustic Artist of the Year in 1992, '94, '96, '97 and '98 by the British Blues Connection. Dave’s performances can get you rocking, or dreaming, and can even hit the tear ducts! He performs it – you feel it.

His work has taken him all over the world – and with travelling being one of his other major interests …. he’s a happy man. So he really does have to dig deep inside on some of those old blues standards, but he achieves it every time. Soulful implies a different genre but in Dave’s case that’s where the music comes from, playing his guitar and singing the blues the way he feels it.
