Nitty Griity Dirt Band

Hello!
There is a great Interview with the NITTY GRITTY DIRT BAND in the current issue of MAVERICK which is a must have monthly magazine....available in WH Smith.
They are a Band with History and always oooozed quality. They could blow most Bands away on an off night putting it mildly! A favourite Album of theirs is the ACOUSTIC CD which they brought out in the mid nineties.....you really should go out and buy it. It's one of those discs that you always end up putting into the CD player time after time! I have a great question for anyone who is interested in Music - 'What are your favourite Bands or Artists?' Usually everyone will list their top five Bands/Artists......Then the next question! What have you been listening to in the last four months in your CD player? Always it is different to the previous question!
I have been fortunate to have Nathan McEuen come and play for me a couple of years ago.....check him out and you will see what I mean!
Hopefully ONE day we may have the NGDB here at the Inn! Well you can always dream cant you!
Meanwhile check out the Mundell Music Website HERE and also check out the Inn at Lathones HERE

Paul Lamb & The Kingsnakes Review

Paul Lamb and his Band played two nights here at the INN AT LATHONES near St.Andrews in Scotland. They had just completed a grueling tour of Poland and Lithuania which proved that Scotland was'nt that cold after all.
The show opened with Paul's son Ryan playing Boogie Blues Guitar after which he was then joined by the Rhythm Section who lighted the touch paper.......Paul Lamb then joined proceedings with his incredible Blues Harmonica. He really is a Master of playing an audience...he very soon had everyone in the palm of his hand. Great songs too many to mention but 'Crazy For Me', Ya Ya Blues and 'The Blues Had a Baby' were a wonderful snapshot as to why everyone was in attendance......Paul Lamb is a Master to his Trade surrounded by a Band that can cruise or go into overdrive at their will.
No excuse catch them when they are next at the Inn

Agents & Tour Managers

Hello Readers!
A recent GIG and a future GIG here at the Inn at Lathones proved that there is NO loyalty or professionalism in some of todays Agents/Tour managers.
A gentlemans agreement-What's that!
I had the misfortune to have to deal with the worst tour manager I've ever met in over 12 years of promoting live music. Talk about obnoxious and rude as well as being full of his OWN importance.... Talk about taking advantage of our hospitality. The sad part was that out of a party of 5 people it was the TM himself that took advantage NOT the Artist. Still I will remember......what goes aroung comes around and HE certainly will not be welcome at the Inn again. I have had the privilege of meeting many many top class Tour Managers......Some have worked with, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Tina Turner etc etc and they are approachable and reasonable that always look at both sides of the Position and MANAGE the situation accordingly.
Now for Agents! How can you have a GIG that's already arranged...events have gone to press and then are told the GIGs off. These things happen I'm afraid...thats what I'm told. But think of this readers. What would they have said if I had called them up to cancel? No chance Eh! Oh yes and I will not be dealing with them anymore either!!!!
We live to fight another day!

Little Feat - Scotland

Hello Feat Fans!
On Fri & Sat 21st & 22nd Nov 2010 here at the INN AT LATHONES we have Paul Barrere & Fred Tackett playing an acoustic GIG all onfront of apprx 50 people! Certainly one not to miss! Look at our Site and book your ticket HERE!

Paul Barrere and Fred Tackett are guitar players.

In fact they are the guitar players with the legendary band Little Feat...

Now they have joined forces to form an acoustic duet that will quite frankly blow you away. Performing songs from their Little Feat catalogue and more with a decidedly different twist.

They first played together on the album ”Dixie Chicken “some twenty-five years ago and since then have played together or individually on numerous recording sessions for Little Feat and countless others including Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Dionne Farris, and the Wallflowers to name a few.

Paul Jones & Dave Kelly

Hello!
Paul Jones & Dave Kelly come to the Inn at Lathones on Fri 22nd & Sat 23rd January 2010. Great show.......Blues at it's best! Buy a Ticket here before it's sold out! Other great shows can be viewed at our website Mundell Music.

These long standing co-vocalists with The Blues Band get a big buzz out of taking things down a level, simplifying the music a little, and plying their trade as a duo, thus imbuing their very own personal and individual approaches to a dynamic, rootsy and exhilarating set of Country Blues. Venues large and small have been hushed and then enraptured by the sense of ‘old times’ in the Mississippi Delta.

PAUL JONES vocals and harmonica

Paul’s career is well charted …. heartthrob singer with Manfred Mann in the '60s, solo hits, songwriting, film and theatre success .… a thrillingly varied and successful career. Apart from his live work with The Blues Band and The Manfreds, he is also currently well known and respected for his work as a DJ, presenting BBC Radio 2’s Rhythm and Blues show and his Jazz FM programmes.

Paul’s feeling for his music and masterfully soulful harmonica playing has kept him at the top of his field in session work …. with countless performances recorded for TV/cinema soundtracks and radio publicity campaigns. He’s been voted top male vocalist by The British Blues Connection and in 1994 was presented with a special award for ‘services to the blues’. In 2001 Paul was the guest of honour on This Is Your Life – an opportunity to recall and celebrate his many successful years in the entertainment industry. (For more on Paul see The Blues Band).

DAVE KELLY vocals and guitar

Dave followed his very talented sister, Jo Ann Kelly, into the world of professional music in 1966 …. they’d previously been regular winners of every talent contest they could get their names down for - on their annual Warners Summer Holiday Camps, playing Everly Brothers hits and early Rock ‘n’ Roll. London’s frenetically hip, yet cool, culture at that time made it seem natural that Dave’s path would cross with the those of Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, John Lee Hooker, Son House, Buddy Guy . to name a few. Sometimes the meetings were casual but ultimately Dave has played with all of them and toured with Wolf and Hooker.

Over the years he’s achieved many accolades for his guitar work and vocals. He was voted Acoustic Artist of the Year in 1992, '94, '96, '97 and '98 by the British Blues Connection. Dave’s performances can get you rocking, or dreaming, and can even hit the tear ducts! He performs it – you feel it.

His work has taken him all over the world – and with travelling being one of his other major interests . he’s a happy man. So he really does have to dig deep inside on some of those old blues standards, but he achieves it every time. Soulful implies a different genre but in Dave’s case that’s where the music comes from, playing his guitar and singing the blues the way he feels it.

Dead Like Harry

DEAD LIKE HARRY - INN AT LATHONES, ST.ANDREWS
Dead Like Harry came to the Inn not quite knowing what to expect. The Inn is a great GIG room. It is a Music Venue as opposed to a Pub.....a listening room. The Band played their new CD and it was awesome. You feel they are about to catch that wave so to speak. Good Musicians and equally great showmanship. Go and see them live...catch them while you can. This lot really will make it ALL the way to the top.
Standout tracks..."What a bloody shame", "Driving to nowhere" and "Satellite".

Michael Jackson

Hello
Sad news that Michael Jackson passed away.He was what he was and he will be missed by alot of people. All day the Radio Stations have been playing various songs of his from The Jackson Five or his solo stuff over the years.
I want to tell you of a Song that really has a great MJ vocal performance on it that should have been a big hit but was lost in the ozone I think in the early eighties.
Do yourself a favour a search for the Track 'Save Me' by Dave Mason With Michael on guest vocals...It really is good. Have a listen "Click Here"
We were very proud to have Jennifer Batten play for us at the Inn at Lathones in March 2009. Check out our other GIGS here!

Keep Live Music Alive Campaign - Mundell Music

We are looking for your support to help our Keep Live Music Alive Campaign. It is a very fragile industry and we need to keep live music venues alive by supporting them.

We are still trying to maintain a high level of artists on the Mundell Music conveyor belt and our Workshops offer a very special way to learn to play Guitar, Drum & Bass and also the art of Songwriting with such legends as Ted McKenna, Alan Thomson, Benny Gallagher, Iain Matthews and Paul Rose to name but a few.

Ultimately if people prefer to enjoy armchair television rather than the Live Music Experience small special venues like The Inn at Lathones will die.

MUST DO:-
  1. Email someone who you know would love to attend a live show (suggest using the sign-up box on the mundellmusic site)
  2. Book a gig and take a youngster along too (to watch someone like John Jorgenson can be a most inspiring experience!)
  3. Call David and ask him to send you a couple of gig lists for your local shop
  4. Call up a neighbour and invite him along to a gig - life needs more social interraction!
  5. Contact David or Peter with more suggestions
To book Tickets call 01334 840494. You can also book a bar meal and stay at discounted prices (for gig-goers only!)

Henry McCullough Review

The Henry McCullough Band

FBI Live *****

By
Michael Mee

You may or may not have heard of Henry McCullough - although it’s more likely you will have - but it’s almost certain you’ll have heard him play. After cutting his teeth with various bands in his native Ireland, McCullough headed for the bright lights of London just as the British blues boom exploded. A meeting with a young Sheffield singer led to a stint in Joe Cocker’s Grease Band, which included their legendary Woodstock performance. After leaving the Grease Band, McCullough joined a little known outfit called Wings, headed by a certain ex-Beatle and his wife. Musical differences between McCullough and McCartney saw a parting of the ways and he - McCullough not Macca - went on to play with a veritable musical who’s who, including Donovan, Marianne Faithful, Spooky Tooth, Eric Burdon and Roy Harper. An accident with a knife on a trip home in the 1980s saw a career re-evaluation and that path led all the way to The Famous Bein Inn, Glenfarg and the latest in the FBI [Famous Bein Inn] Live series. Whilst wildest Perthshire may not have the status of some of the Wings gigs, what is certain is that McCullough is where he wants to be and where he undoubtedly belongs, on stage, any stage. When I read the track listing and saw that after a seven-minute opening of Same Damned Thing, there was House Of The Rising Sun weighing in at over ten minutes. Henry McCullough is not a guitarist to do things by half and both are a glorious throwback to a time when songs were fully explored and McCullough shows himself to be a master of his craft. As good as it is on CD, live it must have been a magical experience. A true genius holds you in the palm of his hand wherever you may be and Henry McCullough is as close to genius as you’ll get. He teases and caresses a classic until it too falls under his spell. But in a way, even House Of The Rising Sun is eclipsed by what follows, Locked In, Can’t Get Out may not be as well known, but it fits Henry McCullough like a second skin. This real, honest-to-goodness British blues, which is raw and earthy, celebrates its blemishes and imperfections but never loses its sense of joy. The pull of Henry McCullough’s folk roots is obviously still strong and he immerses himself in the simple beauty of Belfast To Boston. Until a final flourish there are no guitar pyrotechnics to break the hold, just a man playing from his heart and you really need nothing more, its nine minutes pass in a heartbeat. McCullough’s comfort with the music is obvious but comfort doesn’t breed contempt in this case, he grooves his way through Mess With The Blues before launching in to the title track of his album Failed Christian. Perhaps for the first time on the night McCullough bares his teeth. FBI is quite simply the complete performance as Henry McCullough leads the Bein Inn audience gently by the hand through a blues wonderland.

Henry McCullough FBI Live

The Henry McCullough Band - FBI LIVE - CD Review
BY Andrew Welsh

Legendary Irish Blues Guitarist Henry McCullough makes history by appearing on the first album recorded by Perthshires own Famous Bein Inn. Recorded at Henry's GIG at the Glenfarg Venue in 2006 it has been captured on the new disc, which boasts six epic tracks clocking in at a complete running time of one hour.
The former lead guitarist from Joe Cockers Band and Paul McCartneys Wings is nothing if not experienced and the benefits of a lifetime conected to music pay dividends here.
Sounding every inch the grizzeled rocker he looks, McCullough's rasping vocals overlay a compelling R 'n' B sound that hinges on his own mind blowing six string virtuosity and sound.
With backing from Roe Butcher (Bass), Percy Robinson(Guitar/Pedal Steel), Stephen Quinn(Drums), and Shaun McCarron (Sax) the big H generates a sound so clear and strong it could have been laid down in the most expensive of Caribbean Studios.
Standout tracks in an engrossing set include 'Same damn thing' a poignant 10 minute version of 'House of the rising sun', the McCullough penned 'Failed Christian', and his signature piece, 'I cant remember, I was drunk at the time.'
The sheer audio quality of the fare on offer here is a huge testament to the ability of the Bein Inn's concert room to bring out the best in visiting Artists.
Recorded up close and personal infront of just 60 fans, the set must surely rank among the highlights of McCullough's lenghty and diverse carrer- one that has taken in the Woodstock Festival, an appearence on Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side Of The Moon' and stints with the likes of Marianne Faithfull and Frankie Miller.
At Times laid back at others edgy, the veteran's astonishing performance proves that age is no barrier and bodes well for future releases on the new 'Mundell Music' Record Label.

Peter Tork - Mundell Music wishes him well

It has been reported that Ex- Monkee Peter Tork has been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in his neck and head. He is apparantly very positive and begins treatment soon (according to the bbc news site). We met Peter when he played 2 shows for us at The Inn at Lathones in June 2008. The event made national news and David Mundell appeared live on the BBC News as a result of the publicity. Peter told stories from the hedonistic days of being a Monkee and how hard Mike Nesmith's mum worked with her "liquid paper" invention - mixing it in the family bath and touting it door to door. It would be wonderful to have him play again for Mundell Music, he is planning to fulfill dates with his band Shoe Suede Blues. We, as a very small part of the music industry wish him well on the road to recovery.

Steve Gibbons Band

Hello!
This was a great picture of the STEVE GIBBONS BAND who came to play at the FIFESTOCK Music Festival that was held at the Inn at Lathones in February 2009. I believe that this was their first time here in Scotland for apprx 30 years. They really were good and they had a new CD to promote Chasing Tales.
You should have seen the Trailer that the Band use to transport their equipment....another time and another place!

Terry Reid, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Terry Reid and Jonathan Kelly on Mundell Music

Over the past few years we have been privileged to have had some wonderful artists playing for us - none more so than Big Brother and the Holding Company who played for 2 nights. Fronting the band was Kitto, an Australian singer oozing talent and who sounded very close to Janice Joplin. This was the 1st time EVER that Big Brother and the Holding Company had played Scotland .....and they played for Mundell Music! We recorded one of the shows and you can hear "Ball and Chain" on our MYSPACE site. That amazing weekend was completed by Barry (The FISH) Melton playing one show the following night. Barry was the other half of Country Joe (of Woodstock fame)i.e Country Joe and the Fish. Barry joined BBHC during their second night - the 1st time they have played together for many years!
Terry Reid has played a couple of times for Mundell Music. Having admired him for many years you can appreciate why he has been nicknamed "Superlungs" by his peers. A victim of errant decision making by his management including Micky Most he could/should have been the lead voice of Led Zeppelin and/or Deep Purple. There is a tremendous album "The Driver" which is only available from the US or on download which contains the track "The Whole of the Moon" (Waterboys). This track is magnificent and was due to be released , but sadly the Waterboys re-released their version the same week and Terry's never happened. You can hear a live recording from Terry dedicating "Seeds of Memory" to David Mundell - again on our MYSPACE Site.
Jonathan Kelly is another of those enigmas, he was destined for greatness but sadly drugs etc played a destructive role in Jonathan's life and resulted in him walking away from music. He was tracked down by a long time admirer and coaxed out of retirement and persuaded to play a few gigs (temporarily turning his back on his carpet cleaning business!). We were lucky enough to have had Johnathan playing for us. He is an absolute gentleman , in every sense and it was such an honour to have had him play for us. Again, he allowed us to record his show and you can listen to "Down on Me" on our MYSPACE site. Jonathan it seems is unlikely to gig again, favouring his religious calling. We wish him well.
Keep on checking Mundell Music for live dates

Fifestock Music Festival

Dates for Fifestock's Music Festival have been set for Feb 19th 2010 until March 13th 2010 (dates may vary according to the completed lineup).
Last Year was a huge success with artists including Denny Laine, Coalporters, String Driven Thing, Benny Gallagher, John Jorgenson, Henry McCullough, Andrea Glass, Paul Rose and Hugh Cornwell
Sadly the death of John Martyn, who was to have headlined for 3 nights cast an air of sadness over the Festival but the Big man has left a Big shadow.

The lineup for 2010 should be finalised by the end of the year and there will be some surprises! Can you recommend anyone who would "be that bit special?" - All suggestions will be considered.

Slaid Cleaves and Mundell Music

Hello!
We should be able to bring Slaid Cleaves to the Inn during October. As he says himself....Slaid Cleaves. Grew up in Maine. Lives in Texas. Writes songs. Makes records. Travels around. Tries to be good!
So have a look at our site and check on the date. I dont know when it will be as yet but it should be up during the next few weeks.
Someone else who interests me is Geraint Watkins & Robbie McIntosh. That would be a great GIG. Only trouble being the time of year.....August!
Let me know what you all think.
We have had a great run of gigs recently....Chris Difford, Maggie Bell, Gurf Morlix and Deborah Bonham
We also have put an advert in the List magazine which as brought us some added ticket sales. We are also about to start advertising in the Mojo & Guitarist Magazine with information on our various Workshops.

Deborah Bonham Band - Led Zeppelin - Robbie Blunt

Really looking forward to having the Deborah Bonham Band at The Inn at Lathones on Friday and Saturday (8th/9th May). They will be joined on stage by Robbie Blunt - he was the guitarist on "Big Log" with Robert Palmer and he was in Robert Plant's band for some time. There is talk of Paul Rodgers son Steve possibly hitching a lift on the tour bus if there is enough space - you never know!!!!
Deborah's rendition of "The Old Hyde" - (singing about her late dad and brothers) is one of the most emotive songs I have witnessed - Hankies are really in order!

Over the years we have had the priviledge to have met Deborah's mum (she even had her 80th birthday bash with us) and sister-in-law Pat (widow of John Bonham and Drummer with Led Zeppelin).

CLICK HERE FOR A TASTE OF DEBORAH SINGING "Stay with Me" Live

You could do a lot worse than spend a night in the company of the Deborah Bonham Band. Bring along a friend and go home with loads of happy endorphins coursing through your body!!!!

Paul & Fred (Little Feat)

Hello Everyone!
The weather here in Anstruther is cold to say the least...The coal fire is blazing up the chimney as we speak! The dog's love it!
We are booking for November at the moment and we are having Paul Barrere & Fred Tackett from Little Feat coming to see us! That's one to put in your diary!
We have been Land Rover hunting in the last few weeks and finally I think that we have found one. They are great machines and very versatile...trips to the cash & carry etc etc and useful in adverse weather conditions. The model I prefer is the Defender 90 SWB. I hope to travel up to the north of Scotland later on in the year so that will be an adventure.
November proves to be an incredible month for music. In addition to Paul & Fred we have Andy Fairweather Low and Dennis Locorriere here as well....Better get saving I suppose!!!!!
Talking of money and saving etc etc....we are about to launch a Loyalty Card scheme...so everytime you buy a ticket, drink, food or accommodation you will collect 'points' that can be redeemed against future purchases....the more you spend the more you save. Can't be bad.

Recent Tunes we've been listening to are....
1) Jonathan Kelly - DOWN ON ME.
2) John David Souther - YOUR TURN NOW.
3) John Hiatt - EVERYBODY WENT LOW
4) John Mellencamp - SMALL TOWN.
5) Jimmy Webb - POSTCARD FROM PARIS.
6) Del Amitri - HERE AND NOW.
7) Carole King - READ BETWEEN THE LINES.
8) Beach Boys - HERE SHE COMES.
9) Andrea Glass - WE COULD BE OVER.
10) Rolling Stones - HAND OF FATE.

Happy Listening
Cheers

Hi,

UK Music Pub of the Year - WINNER!

Hi !
Well....we were awarded the prestigious 'Music Pub Of The Year'
It certainly is a great award to have and I personally feel that it is the culmination of around the last three years. So lets drink to that and my thanks go to .....all the Musicians, the audiences, the Inn and everyone at Mundell Music!
Awards were presented at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane in London by none other than Des O'Connor. Drink was consumed in vast quantities and a good time was had by all.
Wished that I could have stayed in London for about another 5 days but it was'nt to be I'm afraid.
Off to the Pub now!
Cheers

Al Perkins

Hi Everyone,
Here is a picture from around 1971 I think of that incredible and greatly overlooked group 'Stephen Stills Manassas'. Go and buy their first album which was a double and you will not be disappointed! Of course the Band featured Mr.Al Perkins who you can see in the picture on the far right...some hair eh! The picture was taken outside of Stills house in Surrey which once belonged to Peter Sellers and thereby goes another few stories probably for another day!
All of you can come to the Inn at Lathones on Sunday 8th March where Al Perkins will be appearing with the Band 'Two Fingers of Firewater" Dont Miss it!
Regards
David

Big Country

Hi,
New blog, new home. Fifestock keeps on going and going! Next Gig is the double header with Bruce Watson and Lee Patterson on Friday night. Should be a good night. I have been speaking to quite a few Bands who are on the Road at the moment and everyone agrees that ticket sales are a hard pull at the moment and Dave Pegg (Fairport Convention) was saying that Merchandise is not selling at all - all signs that everyone has no cash!
Al Perkins will be here on Sunday and I just hope that we have a decent crowd. Everyone should try to see him. He has an incredible history. Manassas,CSNY,Eagles,Rolling Stones....need I go on?

Latest Tunes that I have been listening to are ;
1) Burton Cummings - We just came from the USA
2)Issac Hayes - Shaft
3) Harry Chapin - W.O.L.D.
4) Steve Gibbons Band - Where was I last night ?
5) Henry McCullough - Too Late To Worry.
6) Burton Cummings - Above The Ground
7) Kris Kristofferson - Sunday Morning Coming Down
8) Byrds - Gunga Din
9) Faces - Ooh lala
10) Wings - Big Barn Bed

Cheers

The Fifestock Music Festival has been hurtling along at a furious pace. Sadly 3 nights off due to the death of John Martyn but it all recommences on Friday 6th of March with Bruce Watson, who was the founder member of Big Country (Were you aware that one of the themed bedrooms is that of Big Country - with all sorts of memorabilia adorning the walls!).
Saturday night sees the debut of Lights Out by Nine - which promises to be a great night with a huge cast playing the very best in Blues Music
