Maria Muldaur Backstage

Best known for her seductive '70s pop staple "Midnight at the Oasis," Maria Muldaur has since become an acclaimed interpreter of just about every stripe of American roots music: blues, early jazz, gospel, folk, country, R&B, and so on. While these influences were certainly present on her more pop-oriented '70s recordings (as befitting her Greenwich Village folkie past), Muldaur came into her own as a true roots music stylist during the '90s, when she developed a particular fascination with the myriad sounds of Louisiana. On the string of well-received albums that followed, Muldaur tied her eclecticism together with the romantic sensuality that had underpinned much of her best work ever since the beginning of her career.

Muldaur was born Maria D'Amato on September 12, 1943, in New York. As a child, she loved country & western music and began singing it with her aunt at age five; during her teenage years, she moved on to R&B, early rock & roll, and girl group pop, and in high school formed a group in the latter style called the Cashmeres. Growing up in the Greenwich Village area, however, she naturally became fascinated with its booming early-'60s folk revival and soon began participating in jam sessions. She also moved to North Carolina for a while to study Appalachian-style fiddle with Doc Watson. Back in New York, she was invited to join the Even Dozen Jug Band, a revivalist group that included John Sebastian, David Grisman, and Stefan Grossman; they had secured a recording deal with blueswoman Victoria Spivey's label and she wanted them to add some sex appeal. The young D'Amato got a crash course in early blues, particularly the Memphis scene that spawned many of the original jug bands, and counted Memphis Minnie as one of her chief influences.

Elektra Records bought out the Even Dozen Jug Band's contract and released their self-titled debut album in 1964; however, true to their name, the band's unwieldy size made them an expensive booking on the club and coffeehouse circuit and they soon disbanded. Many of the members went off to college and, in 1964, D'Amato moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, home to another vibrant folk scene. She quickly joined the Jim Kweskin Jug Band and began an affair with singer Geoff Muldaur; the couple eventually married and had a daughter, Jenni, who would later become a singer in her own right. When the Kweskin band broke up in 1968, the couple stayed with their label (Reprise) and began recording together as Geoff & Maria Muldaur. They moved to Woodstock, New York to take advantage of the burgeoning music scene there and issued two albums -- 1970's Pottery Pie and 1971's Sweet Potatoes -- before Geoff departed in 1972 to form Better Days with Paul Butterfield, a move that signaled not only the end of the couple's musical partnership, but their marriage as well.

With Maria initially unsure about her musical future, her friends encouraged her to pursue a solo career, as did Reprise president Mo Ostin. Muldaur went to Los Angeles and recorded her debut album Maria Muldaur in 1973, scoring a massive Top Ten pop hit with "Midnight at the Oasis." Showcasing Muldaur's playfully sultry crooning, the Middle Eastern-themed song became a pop radio staple for years to come and also made session guitarist Amos Garrett a frequent Muldaur collaborator in the future. Muldaur's next album, 1974's Waitress in a Donut Shop, featured a hit remake of her Even Dozen-era signature tune, "I'm a Woman." Three more Reprise albums followed over the course of the '70s, generally with the cream of the L.A. session crop.
Catch Maria Muldaur at Backstage at the Green Hotel, Kinross for Fifestock Music Festival on Fri March 15th 2013. Tickets available from 01577 863467

An Affordable Bands Website.

Mundell Music have developed an affordable Website that is tailor made for Musicians. We designed this in conjunction with Plan B.

To Quote Plan B....
"Well we have been working with David Mundell of Mundell Music for many a year helping him promote his wonderful gigs and venues and in discussion with him we came up with the idea to develop SiteBuilder Bands aimed at giving bands and musicians painless access to their own content managed website. The plethora of social media outlets were available for musicians but we still believed that an anchored presence on their won website would be of major benefit to bands and musicians.

SiteBuilder Bands was born and now provides a cost effective website option with support from someone who knows the industry really well.

The website is built on a series of frameworks incorporating all the external links and feeds - bands can easily upload their YouTube videos, link to downloads, their social media or even their own iTunes or retail pages."

The Latest Website to go live is The Red Pine Timber Co.
www.redpinetimberco.com

Their history? In the summer of 2009, a loose collective of musicians led by former Southpaw Singer/Songwriter and Guitarist Gavin Munro got together one afternoon during the Southern Fried Festival in Perth. They rehearsed just once before performing in front of the festival audience later the same day. The audience loved it and Red Pine Timber Company was born!

They describe their style as Americana Country with a strong Celtic influence and through the band’s willingness to embrace talent when and where they find it, they now have a multinational line-up, an age range of 15 to 45 and, unusually, a horn section

Anyone that would like to know more should contact David Mundell via the Mundell Music Website.

Where have all the Singer Songwriters Gone?

Thats the question that thats been on my mind in recent Months. Where have all the Singer Songwriters gone? No matter the age we seem to have a shortage of Artists who want to play. Young and Old we want to change this situation. So we are going to launch a FIFESTOCK STRICTLY ACOUSTIC Weekend during either August/September time. What we want is original melodic good old Singer Songwriters who would like to come and play. Let me know if you would like to be considered. What we need is....... A sample of a few songs, your website details and a jpeg photo. Once we see what interest there is, then we will decide on what form the weekend will take.

Skinny Molly now includes guitarist Jay Johnson, and bassist Luke Bradshaw. This line up has toured relentlessly, crossing the States and three continents on the strength of their "No Good Deed" debut CD, which has established the band as popular touring outfit across the USA and Europe.

Slim Chance go Backstage in Kinross

Taken from the Birmingham Post...........

THE late, great Ronnie Lane tragically died from multiple sclerosis back in 1997, aged just 51 - but his music will live on forever. Ronnie was the creative Iynchpin of the Faces, one of the all-time great singer-songswriters. Rod Stewart may, have been the on-stage star but Lane's melodies and musicanship were sublime.

When the Faces broke up, Ronnie went back to his roots playing pubs and toured circus-style with his band Slim Chance, and the spirit ,of those times has been lovingly recreated by a latter-day version.

Charlie Hart, Colin Davey, Steve Bingham, Steve Simpson and Alun Davies are 64 carat gold musicians, with a new retrospective CD, The Show-Goes On. There's also a new DVD re-telling the Ronnie lane saga with all the 10s legends - catch this band live while you can. One For The Road, Kuschty Rye, Flags and Banners and Ooh La La were gloriously true to the genius of Ronnie Lane.
Verdict *****
Slim Chance play Backstage at the Green Hotel, Kinross, Scotland on Sat 21st July. Booking line 01577 863467. www.mundellmusic.com

Sinnerboy goes Backstage

By Grahame Rhodes of 'Blues in the Northwest' (Before the new Sinnerboy)

For the last ten years, Barry Barnes has led the excellent Sinnerboy, one of the premier Rory Gallagher tribute bands, who have toured extensively around Europe, Scandinavia and the USA. However the band is to split next year and he will be concentrating on a solo career, and therefore comes his first solo cd “Rory!” – a heartfelt collection of both some of the great man’s songs and some of the country blues tunes he used to cover, from the likes of Blind Boy Fuller, Leadbelly and Son House.
Barnes got the Rory bug seeing him live for the first time in 1969, and was a major fan after that, and he was already a country blues fan from listening to his brother’s vinyl collection, here he pays homage to his favourite guitar player of all time, and a fine job he has done too – the tracks recorded in a variety of locations as far apart as Dublin, Athens and Yorkshire!
Eight of the tracks were laid down at Reaction Studios in Athens, including an acoustic take on the superb “Moonchild”; the very old song, “The Cuckoo”, and a slide work out on Son House’s immortal “Death Letter Blues”. A highlight from the Greek recordings is a beautiful version of “I Fall Apart”, a Gallagher song from way back on his debut solo album in 1971, and delivered with skill and passion here by Barry Barnes.
A rowdy Dublin crowd in the Temple Bar Music Centre are enthusiastic on the opening “Pistol Slapper Blues” by Blind Boy Fuller, famously recorded on the “Live In Europe” album, and a fine “Out On The Western Plain” – the Leadbelly song that used to feature in Rory Gallagher’s acoustic interludes. Paul Westwell helps out on harmonica on Big Bill Broonzy’s “Nothin’ But The Devil”, recorded at Calder Studios in Yorkshire, as was the rousing “Barley And Grape Rag” . . . featuring some sweet violin from Tracy Smith, with Dave Burns (double bass) and Ozzer McLoughlin (drums).
As a Rory ‘nut’ myself I thoroughly enjoyed this album . . . . great singing and playing, but with fun as well – check out the unlisted closer!) – nice one Barry . . . and more power to him for keeping the memory of the legendary Rory Gallagher alive!

Verden Allen's Softground play Backstage

A recent review of a gig at the Half Moon in Putney. The Band play Backstage at the Green Hotel, Kinross on Sat 1st September. Book now on 01577 863467.

As the organ sound and occasional vocalist of Mott the Hoople's first five albums, Verden Allen needed no introduction to his audience, the Soft Ground set being a satisfying romp through his four Angel Air released albums with a few well chosen songs borrowed from the Hoople's back catalogue.

Playing well-paced organ fuelled rock at its finest, Soft Ground's powerful sound stands well alongside Mott's early years, being delivered in a relaxed style, but with a contemporary feel that breathed a new lease of life into a brooding version of 'Soft Ground', from the Hoople's first CBS album, 'All The Young Dudes'. A similarly rapturous welcome greet

ed the Island era 'Death May Be Your Santa Clause', both Hoople songs having been rerecorded for 'Long Time No See'.

Exchanging some banter with Luther Grosvenor, who was in fine form in the audience, Verden launched into 'On the Rebound', co-written and recorded with Luther for 'For Each Other', before a run of Hoople songs gifted the assembled Mott crowd hearty renditions of 'Roll Away The Stone', 'All the Young Dudes' and 'Rock'n'Roll Queen'.

An encore of four songs saw Verden exchanging more licks with guitarist Jamie Thyer, who demonstrated a dextrous touch when playing slide during 'My Masochistic Side', whilst the rhythm section of Rob Hankins (bass) and Matthew Blakout (drums) reconvened the urgency that always underpinned the Hoople's proto-punk sound. The band's powerful sound was further demonstrated by the closing number, a blistering rerun of Mott's infamous Kinks cover, 'You Really Got Me'.

Kitto plays Backstage

Kitto plays Backstage on Saturday 23rd June at the Green Hotel, Kinross. Book Tickets on tel 01577 863467.
Australian Kitto does not make it easy for reviewers who wish to compare her with anything. She is an odd mix of Hole Grunge and whiskey cracked singer-songwriter whose sound is quite unique. I will therefore refrain from comparisons; Kitto running her own race and it would be both wrong and futile to try to push her into an existing slot.
The deep, bordering on masculine voice is interesting and comes to full expression in the airy and simple but effective production. Kitto manages to bring home the feeling of a dark, smoky rock club to the living room. Her version of the weight is not about to screw everything up to eleven. Instead, it is about a mysterious evocative mood that runs like a thread through the entire album. Best examples is the "Birth of a samurai," or closing track "Balloon", to name a few.
Kitto is cocky enough to venture on the David Bowie classic "Heroes" and do it with honor. Gone is the grandeur that made the original. Left is the naked essence of the song that suddenly takes on a new meaning. This courageous risktaking is a real homerun.
No one should sit and nod when Kitto presses her foot down in the "Girls Who went away" and leave tire tracks in the asphalt. Kittos strength is her voice and the simplicity of these days requires a hefty measure of courage.
